Ålesund – yet another capital of Norway, this time a capital of fishing. Even the name of the city may refer to fish according to one possible translation: “eel fish”.

If you visit Ålesund, even briefly, you’ll remember the city’s history for a long time. There are several fascinating episodes which you can relate to your friends while you’re showing them your incredibly beautiful holiday photos.

Ålesund has everything needed to be a highlight of your journey. It is the perfect starting point for the most impressive attractions like Geiranger or Eagle Road, or it can be a place where you come specifically to fish. You can easily reach Ålesund by any of the daily Hurtigruta boats cruises.

Key Facts

Giske Island

On the island of Giske, you can see some beautiful white sandy beaches, like those by tropical seas. The view of the ocean and islands is unforgettable. You can dive and swim here. But don’t forget: you are not far from the Arctic Circle and the water is permanently cold.

Atlantic Sea Park

The Atlantic Sea Park is situated a couple of kilometres out of town and can be reached by a city bus. Worth a visit with kids, especially to see a diver hand-feeding the fish.

Runde Island

You can take a round trip to the famous bird cliffs on the island of Runde, where over 500,000 birds nest every year. More than 220 species have been observed here, but the most famous of these are puffins like the one on our logo. The birds can be observed from a boat sailing around the island or from marked paths across the cliffs.

Sunnmoere Museum

Sunnmoere Museum is a great outdoor museum that gives a glimpse back in time with an exhibition of early boat building, including Viking boats. There are also houses showing home/farm life from the 1600s to the 1900s.

Aksla Stadium

Yet another classic panoramic view of the city can be found at Aksla Stadium. It’s about 400 steps up and starts from the Town Park. That may feel a bit strenuous, so you can also use transport to get there. You will find additional hiking opportunities once you are on the top.

Fjellstua is an absolutely stunning place to enjoy vast, sweeping views of the fjord, islands, mountains and beautiful town of Ålesund below. You will get some exercise walking up to the point, but there are benches placed along the path for those who might need them. For those who do not want to climb, there are buses or taxis available.
