Roskilde

Denmark

1000 years ago, Roskilde was one of the leading cities in Northern Europe, making a spectacular development from being a small Viking settlement to a capital city of the country. It is a lovely town, with lots of shops, cafés, bars, parks, churches and world-class attractions.

Since Roskilde is so close to Copenhagen, you might think it would be very much like Denmark’s capital city and a day excursion here would be a waste of time. But in fact, it is difficult to find two Danish cities more unlike each other and you will definitely enjoy a day’s tour here.

Roskilde in a Nutshell

This is one of the most interesting tours in Denmark, showing off the ancient capital of the Vikings, Roskilde, which is located in the East of Zealand island, on the shores of Roskilde Fjord, 35 km away from Copenhagen.

We start our tour from Roskilde Cathedral and proceed to the oldest street of the city. There, we stop for a while at the small square Stændertorvet to look at the City Hall, built in neo-Gothic style (1884) and attached to the bell tower of the former church of St. Lawrence (Sct. Laurentii Kirke). You will also see the other great attraction in Roskilde: the Viking Ship Museum. Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the residents of the city sank five ships at the entrance of the Roskilde Fjord in order to protect the city. These ships were raised from the seabed in the ’60s and ’70s of the 20th century and partially restored in a special laboratory. If the weather allows, you can see the ships in action: set the sails, row with oars and learn how to turn.
